What is Media Literacy?

Who would have thought we’d make it this far this fast?

It is with no doubt that the rising generation is being inevitably exposed to media platforms that are under constant rapid development. Nowadays, a large number of members of this generation might have the interest in becoming part of the institutions that inflict such development. In other words, it is becoming more and more available for young people to choose to pursue an education in this field, and those who succeed may just end up being media literate.

Media literacy is the ability to interpret and produce all 3 of the symbolic systems: images, words, and sounds. It allows us to analyze multimodal texts, ranging from traditional text, to visual material such as films, and audio like podcasts.

Media Literacy can be considered an outcome of media education, but of course, it is not solely dependent on what is learnt inside the classroom; it is a combination of education and proper exposure to media in the real world. This would empower young people by encouraging them to actively participate in media environments.

Look at me -studying television & film, thriving to have a career in media. With the right formal education, and the right exposure, I might just be on the road to becoming media literate.
